Get Involved! Become a Volunteer!

Volunteers are vital to raising awareness in the USA. We rely on this group of people to reach healthcare providers and treatment facilities throughout the USA. Iron disorders especially hemochromatosis do not garner the attention of the media or medical community because the treatment for the majority of people does not require a drug. We can achieve iron balance with iron reduction or iron replenishment using inexpensive but highly effective approaches.

If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer State or Regional Coordinator please complete the Sign Up form. You may first want to read through the Tools & Action Steps. If you choose to sign up, someone from the Iron Disorders Institute (representative for the Hemochromatosis Foundation) will contact you.

Tools include DVDs, Power Point presentations, printed educational materials (brochures, charts, posters), table top displays and business cards. These can be ordered through us in our online store.

Action Steps Getting Started:
  1. Make contact with the local blood bank or hospital offering a hemochromatosis donor program*.
  2. Ask if they will provide a desk or table that can be designated the hemochromatosis (or iron disorders) information table.
  3. See if the blood center is willing to pay the cost of these educational materials, which is modest.
  4. Send a notice to IDI with the contact details for the center. Some supplies are free (because of local donations), but other products are available at cost.
  5. Try to maintain a schedule to periodically check the status of supplies on the table.
  6. If there is a center or hospital in your area interested in applying for the FDA variance so that they can accept hemochromatosis blood, we will help you help them achieve that goal.
Action Steps Advanced:

Once your level of knowledge is great enough and you feel confident about leading a workshop, IDI will provide you with an online (web-based) instructional training session and PowerPoint presentation on the following topics:

  • Diet
  • Genetics
  • Double Red Cell Apheresis
  • Treatment Pitfalls

PowerPoint presentations are sent as free downloads and are used in the training session. Presentations can only be sent by first signing up as a volunteer.
